Cost is where the conversation gets more nuanced. Trenchless repair is often described as cost-effective, and that is true in many real-world situations, but not because the repair method is always cheaper on the front end. When trenchless pipe repair may not be the best choice

If a pipe has fully collapsed over a long section, has severe misalignment, or has structural issues that prevent proper liner installation or replacement pathing, excavation may be the safer and more dependable route.

Because it installs a new pipe while fracturing the old one outward, it can address more severe deterioration and may allow for equal-size or upsized replacement depending on site conditions. It is a more intensive process than lining, but it remains far less disruptive than open trench replacement in the right environment.

Neither method is automatically better. The right answer depends on the condition of the line and the performance goal. If the objective is structural rehabilitation with minimal disruption, lining may be ideal. If the objective is full replacement of a failing pipe, bursting may be the stronger solution.
